In a stunning collaboration between modern lighting technology and ancient architecture, ILDL (Illuminate Landscapes & Design) has brought the Sun Temple of Modhera to life after sunset. The Hindu temple, dedicated to the solar deity Surya and built during the Chalukya dynasty around 1026-27 CE, has undergone a breathtaking transformation with a carefully crafted lighting project.
The highlight of the illumination is the strategic placement of luminaires with a CCT of 2200K in the temple’s façade, mimicking the warmth of the rising sun. The eastern entrance gate has been ingeniously designed so that the first ray of the sun at dawn falls directly on a gem embedded in the Sun God’s crown, lighting up the entire sanctum and creating a divine ambiance.
The Sabhamanḍapa (assembly hall) and shrine hall have been adorned with a gentle light grazing effect, achieved through the use of linear grazers mounted on the peripheral boundary wall railing. Linear wall washers, strategically placed on the floor, uniformly wash the pavilion wall, enhancing its architectural details. Subtle illumination has been applied to the background trees, providing a harmonious backdrop.
The Shikhara of the temple takes center stage, accentuated with multiple spot projectors mounted on poles, casting a spotlight on the intricate details of this ancient structure. The central kund and the surrounding small temples have been delicately highlighted with small base-mounted spots, creating a mesmerizing scenic effect when reflected on the still water of the kund.
A unique feature of the temple complex is the presence of 108 small temples surrounding the outside tank, contributing to a visually enchanting experience during both dusk and dawn. The entire lighting arrangement has been designed to preserve the sanctity of the heritage site while offering a captivating spectacle for visitors.
