ASR, a renowned architecture and design studio based in Porto, has unveiled its latest project, the Singer apartment renovation. Named after the iconic Singer building constructed in 1939 on Rua de Sá da Bandeira, this Art Déco landmark has undergone a transformative redesign that seamlessly blends heritage elements with contemporary aesthetics.
The studio’s approach to the renovation reflects a meticulous consideration of the original details and material palette of the Singer building. The result is a new layout that breaks away from compartmentalization, creating an open and flexible living space for its occupants.
One of the notable features of the renovation is the introduction of a second circulation axis adjacent to the main façade, filling the interior with natural light from both sides. The bedrooms, strategically placed within an open layout of social spaces, maintain privacy through the use of elegant curtains.
The spacious living room, situated at the elbow of the building, is ingeniously divided by a symmetry axis perfectly aligned with the angle between the two streets. This design choice not only enhances the functionality of the space but also adds a touch of architectural sophistication.
ASR’s commitment to preserving the essence of the Singer building is evident in every new element introduced. From Déco-inspired kitchen cupboard knobs to wardrobe and door handles crafted from oak wood, and even the bathroom’s stonework mirroring the Lioz stone used for window sills, each addition pays homage to the existing heritage.
