As one of the biggest names in architecture Zaha Hadid is no newcomer to stepping out of the box and dabbling in other forms of design. Her portfolio includes chairs, outdoor planters, door handles, and shelves. The latest addition to Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) portfolio is the ‘Natural Field’ handmade rug collection made from Himalayan wools and silks; in collaboration with ILLULIAN.
In line with her design ideology of perspective, form, and space, ILLULIAN’s all-natural materials and weaving process is described as a metamorphosis of simple yarn. The Transformation of ‘chaotic fibres into pure art’ by the process of knotting, pushing, pulling, and stretching is reflected in the interwoven design. A textural interplay is seen within the thick matte of the Himalayan wool and the sheen of the silk threads that are interwoven; resulting in a dynamic change in visual with the change in light and perspective.
The collection draws parallels with the dense, undulating networks evident in nature; While Zaha Hadid’s architecture is also reflected in the design of the rugs in the form of patterns and the organic coil of the yarn. With intricate craftsmanship from skilled artisans and the manufacturing process backed by the practice’s research and material inquisition, the ILLULIAN handmade rugs were conceived.
