Studio Lumen, an esteemed lighting design firm, was recently honored for their exceptional work at the inaugural Commercial Interior Design Awards: Hospitality. The prestigious event took place on June 21, 2023, at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, where outstanding individuals and projects in the hotel, restaurant, and bar sectors were recognized.
Studio Lumen received the esteemed accolade for “Best Use of Lighting in a F&B or Hotel Project” for their remarkable contribution to the Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa project. Bab Al Shams has long been a renowned destination in Dubai, celebrated for its resort that embodies authentic Arabian hospitality. During the resort’s recent renovation, the objective was to provide a much-needed rejuvenation while preserving the design’s relevance and future-proofing it by combining traditional visual heritage with contemporary Arabic elements.
The lighting concept played a vital role in the fusion of culture and modernity. Studio Lumen expertly curated a warm and relaxing ambiance, epitomizing the perfect desert retreat for guests. Working closely with the core design team, consisting of architects, interior designers, and landscape architects, Studio Lumen achieved a delicate balance that accentuated the splendor of the location and facilitated seamless navigation throughout the sprawling resort.
Patterned decorative lighting, coupled with integrated fittings that harmonized with the interior and landscape details, formed the primary layer of light. Complementary downlights and additional light sources were strategically incorporated to accentuate key features and create a captivating visual effect.
In the guestrooms, Studio Lumen carefully established a comforting light balance to cultivate a relaxed atmosphere. The lighting was intelligently programmed to adapt to different times of the day and night, ensuring optimal levels for guests. The lobby area boasted a well-thought-out combination of zones catering to various activities, with lighting serving as a pivotal element in creating a smooth transition while maintaining each space’s distinct identity. Al Hadheerah, the open-air restaurant, showcased lighting as a prominent feature, welcoming guests with the gentle glow of lanterns and fostering a serene dining experience.
