SOMANY Ceramics Collaborates with IIID Hyderabad to Transform Waste into Art at Sthapatya Utsav 2024

SOMANY Ceramics Ltd., a leading name in the ceramic industry, has partnered with the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), Hyderabad, for an innovative initiative, “Transforming Broken Tiles into Trendsetting Style,” at the prestigious “Sthapatya Utsav” festival. Held from June 20 to 23, 2024, and organized by IIID’s Hyderabad Regional Chapter, the event aimed to promote sustainable construction and waste reduction through creative reuse.

A highlight of the festival was the mural design competition, where over 50 interior design and architecture students from colleges across Telangana demonstrated their artistic and technical prowess by turning discarded tiles into stunning murals. The competition, led by industry experts, gave students hands-on experience in sustainable design, pushing them to think beyond the classroom and apply practical solutions to real-world environmental challenges.

With participation from 200-250 students representing 15-20 design and architecture schools, “Sthapatya Utsav” brought together students, architects, designers, and faculty members, fostering an engaging learning environment. The event also featured a range of workshops across various design disciplines, focusing on sustainability, creativity, and innovation.

Anshuman Chakravarty, Head of Marketing at Somany Ceramics, expressed pride in supporting such a forward-thinking initiative. “We are delighted to see young designers and architects championing sustainability. At Somany Ceramics, we’ve long prioritized sustainable practices—our tile adhesive, for instance, is produced entirely from waste tiles. This collaboration with IIID Hyderabad not only promotes recycling but also empowers students to think creatively about reducing construction waste and debris.”

Pallavi Anchuri, Chairperson of IIID Hyderabad, echoed the sentiment, noting the real-world impact of the initiative. “This collaboration has offered interior design and architecture students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sustainable design, applying their skills to address environmental concerns. It has allowed them to make a meaningful contribution while refining their abilities.”
