Experience Farm life at House on a farm in current cultural context by Architecture Interspace

A get-away spot called the house on a farm is created by Architecture Interspace to take a break from the hustle of urban life. It is a vacation home designed in a picturesque village near the port town of Karaikal in Southern Tamil Nadu. It is set amidst the fruit orchards, paddy fields, and the shade of sandalwood trees. The design thought revolved around creating a space that not only connects the inhabitants with their surroundings but also to their inner selves. The site is also a retreat for birds and squirrels.

The design and materials that are incorporated in the project are timeless and reflect the simplicity of rural life. To achieve an efficient microclimate design and minimize the impact on local vegetation the building footprint is kept at 140 sqm. The house is positioned far from the street and a landscape buffer is created around the house that only allows a sneak peek of the residence.

The design philosophy is a mix of living with nature achieved with rustic themes and comfortable work-from-home weekends enabled with contemporary finishes. The design of the house encapsulates the surrounding environment and brings in the rural way of life and instills it in the present-day lifestyle and culture. The primary aspects of the Indian Vaastu Shastra Mandala govern the architectural plan of the House on a farm. The structure is composed of two cuboids consisting of the living and cooking spaces with bedrooms which are separated to ensure privacy.

The core of the house is the dining area that acts as a transitional connecting ledge between the two cuboids. It is designed with views of an open court on one side and an outdoor deck and plunge pool on the other side. The infinity pool overlooks the fruit orchards and 100-year-old artesian well which is the source of water for the pool.

The traditional courtyards are presented in a contemporary format through semi-outdoor spaces and open courts in the house on a farm. These spaces start a conversation between indoor and outdoor environments and regulate the microclimate of the house. Each space offers a complete sky-to-land view of the field and this exposure impacts the mental well-being of an individual.

The windows use locally sourced Corten effect steel boxes near Karaikal post which induces aesthetic quotient to the bland concrete built. The plinth of the house is inside the building to give a raised look from the ground which reduces the volumetric bulky look of concrete and crafts a serene space. Earthy wood and balck&white color tones are chosen for the interiors of the house on a farm. The walls are finished with lime-based polished gray oxide which along with black vitrified tiles flooring creates a monochrome and minimal backdrop for the bright-colored furniture and decor.

Despite the surrounding lush greens, the landscape of House on a farm is redesigned with shade-providing trees and locally available fruit and vegetable-bearing plants that blend well with the existing variety of landscape. The resulting design provides a zen experience to the inhabitants of farm life.
