The Chalk Studio Office is a great example of how modern design can be inspired by classic principles. The studio is constantly evolving and innovating, and its headquarters reflect this spirit of change. Chalk is a simple yet timeless material, and the office uses it in innovative ways to create a space that is both stylish and functional. Nestled on the 20th floor of a commercial complex in Gurgaon’s urban heart, the studio makes a home amid panoramic views, witnessing the meeting of endless green pastures, the vast skies, and the humdrum of the city.
The team’s working style fueled the design process at the primary stages, placing collaboration figuratively and metaphorically at its nucleus. There have been over two dozen iterations of the workspace, with changes made to the backend and Vaastu-posed improvisations. The current state of the workspace is an equilibrium between functionality, interaction, and empowermilieu. Each nook was detailed with in-situ sketches and spontaneous notes, often improvised at the site.
The original blueprint has been effectively imagined by creating a quality of space that dissolves rigid hierarchy and instead catalyses meaningful dialogue around design. Upon entering the space, you’re immediately welcomed by a quaint reception area. The EvoWood panels enveloping the area create a sense of warmth, while the textured and umber finish on the panels complement the veined Statuario marble flooring.
The reception area is designed for both comfort and function, with a striking blue bench and eye-catching wall sculpture. This space is also convenient, with two meeting rooms located nearby. The first meeting room features a beautiful custom-built table, perfect for discussions. The deep blue hue of the suede-upholstered Shearling chairs is reminiscent of the cobalt blue ceiling, adding a pop of color to an otherwise minimalist space. The second meeting room, located across the corridor, shares a similar look and feel to the first with a few key differences. It’s enclosed in a glass partition system with a brushed brass frame and is mainly used for interviews and quick reviews.
The third meeting room is a warm and inviting space with stunning views of the city. It’s the perfect place for studio members and clients to come together and immerse themselves in discussion about design. The ceiling is adorned with beautiful coffered beams and veneers, giving the room a dynamic look and feel.
The custom white marble-topped conference table is the focal point of the room, with the light terracotta Shearling chairs forming a circle around it. The Hatsu pendant hangs over the discussion zone, enunciating the expansive table’s geometry.
The studio head cabin is a haven for the Principal Designer, and it embodies the firm’s design persona. The space is light and airy, with herringbone flooring and views of the skyline. The custom-designed desk in Corian Quartz is perfect for working on projects, and the head chair and visitor chairs are comfortable and stylish.
The workstation bay is at the heart of the studio, bringing all the departments together. This area is mostly grey, with light-colored wood furniture, white walls, and splashes of green to create a calm and focused environment. The “designer’s hub” is a 12-person communal desk where team members can exchange ideas and collaborate with each other. A sleek, matte black light fixture extends across the length of the desk, providing task illumination for the workstations. The studio’s principal designers earlier this year had an intervention in the Istanbul Barry Callebaut Office. They took inspiration from the design detail and came up with their own partition system. The system has a sweeping curved silhouette with pale-hued diaphanous glass in clear, pink, and blue finishes.
The Chalk Studio Office embodies the company culture of collaboration in its physical space. The design of the studio dismisses the oppressive divisions of traditional offices, both spatially and mentally. It pays homage to the Chalk Studio Tribe, which fosters the idea of dwelling within and dreaming of immaculate design for years to come!
