Merging Two Century-Old Buildings into Modern Living Spaces Revitalizes Heritage

Ar. Pedro Carrilho’s innovative project revitalizes heritage by transforming two historic urban buildings into a vibrant residential complex. Seamlessly blending restoration with modern design, these once-abandoned, century-old structures—previously in a state of advanced degradation—are now reimagined to meet the needs of contemporary urban living.

The architectural vision focuses on urban residential renovation, restoring commercial use on the ground floor while creating high-quality living spaces above. The entrance floor features two one-bedroom apartments (T1), while the upper levels house additional T1 units and two two-bedroom (T2) apartments. At the top, an exclusive apartment offers access to a stunning rooftop terrace, providing residents with a unique living experience.

To unify the two buildings aesthetically, a facade redesign was essential. The smaller building underwent a two-storey vertical expansion, enhancing the overall visual appeal while optimizing natural light and ventilation. This thoughtful approach ensures the comfort and hygiene of all units, which is crucial in contemporary habitation.

A significant aspect of this heritage restoration project is the careful integration of original materials. The original tiles from the buildings were recovered and creatively repurposed as interior wall paneling, creating a striking connection between past and present. The use of Lioz limestone masonry, characteristic of the original construction, has been meticulously restored, ensuring that the architectural character remains intact.

Natural lighting was a key consideration in the design process. The addition of five dormer windows in the attic not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also improves ventilation, bathing the interiors in sunlight and creating a welcoming atmosphere. This focus on natural light aligns with modern living standards, addressing the growing demand for comfort in urban spaces.

The pastel green facade, chosen to highlight the building’s architectural features, allows the structure to blend harmoniously with its surroundings while maintaining its historical integrity. This approach creates a perfect balance between contemporary design and the preservation of architectural heritage.
