The transformation of Exporlux, one of Portugal’s leading lighting equipment companies, has redefined its architectural identity. Situated in Águeda, the company’s expansive facility underwent a comprehensive renovation, which included the creation of a state-of-the-art lighting laboratory and extensive redesigns to the showroom, training areas, office spaces, and exterior facade. This intervention marks a significant leap in Exporlux’s growth, creating a unified and modern architectural language for the company’s expanding needs.
Over the years, Exporlux had expanded incrementally, leading to a series of building interventions that resulted in a fragmented and somewhat incoherent architectural image. Each phase of expansion featured different materials and styles, creating visual dissonance. The latest renovation, designed by architect António Figueiredo, sought to address these inconsistencies by simplifying interior finishes and creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space. This approach not only resolved previous design conflicts but also aligned the architecture with Exporlux’s innovative spirit.
One of the most significant changes was the requalification of the building’s exterior. The introduction of a curtain facade with vertically arranged frosted glass panels gave the industrial building a new, modern appearance. The glass sheets were meticulously designed to create a rhythmic modulation and overlap, punctuated by voids that reveal the green spaces between the new facade and the original structure. This design feature not only enhanced the building’s aesthetic appeal but also contributed to solar control, ensuring optimal light exposure.
The curtain facade was extended to both of the building’s main facades, providing a sense of uniformity and flow across the entire structure. The contemporary glass treatment reflected the company’s forward-thinking attitude while maintaining a strong connection to the building’s industrial roots.
Inside, the renovation focused on creating a more functional and welcoming space for Exporlux’s products and clients. The showroom, located on the first floor, was completely redesigned to better display the company’s lighting products. The highlight of this area is the staircase leading to the second floor, which stands out due to its striking design in exposed white concrete, complemented by the horizontal wooden slats that wrap around the continuous wall and extend into the curved ceiling.
The interior spaces, such as the showroom and cafeteria, now open up to a landscaped courtyard. This outdoor space acts as a serene escape and mirrors the modernity of the glass facade with its reflective surfaces, creating a dynamic play of light and shadows throughout the day. The lighting laboratory building’s dark mirrored glass facades contribute to this, offering an ever-changing reflection depending on the sunlight’s position.
The renovation’s emphasis on sustainability is evident not only in the use of eco-friendly materials and design techniques but also in the building’s performance. The integration of the curtain facade with its innovative glass system reduces the need for artificial cooling, minimizing energy consumption. The new lighting showroom and laboratory further promote sustainability, showcasing Exporlux’s commitment to energy-efficient and eco-conscious products.
