The Decor Journal India (TDJI): Can you start by telling us about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in architecture and interior design?

Anup: My journey into architecture began quite naturally, having been born and raised in Delhi. The city’s unique blend of historic and modern structures always fascinated me, sparking a curiosity in construction and the technologies associated with it. This curiosity led me to pursue formal education in architecture, and later, in interior architecture. With the guidance of my teachers and mentors, I discovered the transformative power of design in shaping spaces and lifestyles. The challenge of blending creativity with practicality to craft tangible experiences was irresistible, pushing me towards a career dedicated to meaningful design.

TDJI: What were some key milestones in your career that led to the formation of Expastudio in 2020?

Anup: Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with visionary clients and talented professionals who share a passion for innovation and design. Each project, whether a high-profile commission or a transformative renovation, served as a stepping stone toward establishing Expastudio. The culmination of these diverse experiences, along with a deep-rooted commitment to design excellence, led to the formation of Expastudio in 2020. This marked a new chapter where we focused on pushing the boundaries of architecture and interior design.

TDJI: Your work is known for being bold and exuberant. Can you describe your design philosophy and what drives your creativity?

Anup: At Expastudio, we are driven by the desire to create spaces that are exuberant, eccentric, and exclusive. Our philosophy is about harmonizing functionality with aesthetics, ensuring that our spaces are both visually striking and functionally efficient. We constantly challenge ourselves to bring something different to the table for our clients, whether it’s through unique colors, patterns, or textures. This approach keeps our creativity alive and helps us create spaces that provoke thought, inspire creativity, and evoke emotions.

TDJI: How do you integrate the concept of spatial design in your projects, and why do you believe it’s important for creating luxurious spaces?

Anup: Spatial design is at the core of creating luxurious spaces. It’s not just about using expensive materials or the scale of a space; it’s about crafting a space that interacts with the user on a sensory level, creating an intangible connection. At Expastudio, we meticulously analyze spatial flow, light dynamics, and materiality to design experiences that feel intimate and luxurious. By prioritizing sensory engagement, we ensure that every corner of our designs exudes a sense of sophistication and enhances the quality of life for our clients.

TDJI: Can you share a project that you feel best exemplifies your approach to architecture and interior design?

Anup: The Farm House project at Chhatarpur is a great example of our approach. Although it was a smaller project, it allowed us to go all out with colors and textures, resulting in an eclectic design that we thrive on. Another project, The Bikers’ Barn in Gurugram, is a large-scale project that has been widely appreciated by the biking community. The scale, volume, and color scheme of the project reflect our commitment to creating spaces that harmonize aesthetics with functionality.

TDJI: How do you leverage technology and robust project management tools in your work to deliver end-to-end solutions?

Anup: Technology plays a pivotal role in our design process, allowing us to visualize concepts, streamline communication, and optimize project timelines. We use advanced 3D modeling software, virtual reality simulations, and state-of-the-art project management tools to develop design iterations and engage clients effectively. These tools ensure seamless coordination among stakeholders, from the conceptual stage to execution. Recently, we’ve also started incorporating AI into the process of creating initial mood boards and refining visualizations. Although I’m not a huge proponent of AI in design, it has proven useful in exploring new ideas and concepts.

TDJI: What are some of the latest trends in architecture and interior design that excite you?

Anup: We are strong supporters of eclectic design, and as Western culture continues to influence our daily lives, I believe our design language will evolve towards a more complex and experimental narrative. At Expastudio, we celebrate this evolution by integrating diverse cultural elements and stylistic influences into our projects. Additionally, I’m excited about the growing emphasis on sustainability and wellness in design. Incorporating biophilic principles, sustainable materials, and smart technologies not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances user well-being, which has become a major component of modern luxury.

TDJI: Can you share an example of a particularly challenging project and how you and your team navigated it to deliver a successful outcome?

Anup: One of our most challenging projects was designing a banquet for one of the ITC Hotels in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. The target audience included government officials and corporate delegates, which required us to carefully study their needs and preferences. Additionally, the project presented complex site constraints due to its hilltop location. Through collaborative problem-solving and innovative design solutions, we overcame these challenges and successfully transformed adversity into an opportunity to showcase our adaptability and commitment to excellence.

TDJI: What are your future goals for Expastudio? How do you see the company evolving in the next five to ten years?

Anup: Looking ahead, our vision for Expastudio is to expand our national footprint while maintaining our commitment to design innovation and client satisfaction. We aspire to cultivate strategic partnerships, embrace emerging technologies, and nurture a culture of creativity and excellence within our team. By continuously pushing boundaries and anticipating industry trends, we aim to establish Expastudio as a trailblazer in luxury architecture and interior design on a global scale. In the next five to ten years, we hope to diversify our portfolio with experimental projects that continue to make the world a more beautiful place.

TDJI: Who or what are your biggest influences in the world of architecture and design?

Anup: I draw inspiration from a wide range of influences, from pioneering architects and interior designers to cultural movements like Bauhaus, which championed the integration of art, craft, and technology in design. While I don’t have a favorite design style, any design that evokes a sense of emotion resonates with me. Contemporary trends in sustainable architecture and biophilic design have also captured my attention. Lastly, I’m deeply inspired by the global diversity of design styles and traditions. Traveling and experiencing different cultures’ built environments provide invaluable insights into how spatial design can reflect and celebrate a place’s identity while embracing global influences.
