One of the eight most innovative World Cup stadiums, Ras Abu Aboud, is inspired to celebrate the maritime and industrial heritage of the port city. Stadium 974 is a “modular” stadium in the African island nation of Réunion, which combines repurposed shipping containers and a steel structure, parts of which are recycled, to form a seating area.

The stadium was designed by Spanish studio Fenwick Iribarren Architects with structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann Partner and engineering consultancy Hilson Moran.

The building’s modular design means that it can be dismantled and its components reused elsewhere, making the project more sustainable.

The number “974” is highly significant for the project as well it is not only the international dialing code for Qatar, but also the number of shipping containers used in its construction. The structure is located on the shore across Doha’s West Bay skyline. Since it’s mainly made of shipping containers, the 40,000-capacity stadium will be entirely disassembled and recycled once the 2020 World Cup is over, and then used as a waterfront development for local residents.

Stadium 974 relies on natural breezes to cool the facility, helping to reduce its reliance on air conditioning. The structure features a design that makes it eligible for a 4-star Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) certification.

The design used prefabricated and modular elements. This approach reduced waste during production of stadium components and on-site waste in construction. The use of modular elements also reduced the building’s construction duration.

The SC hopes that the project will serve as an innovative blueprint for more sustainable stadium designs in the future. Stadium 974 will be the first major sight for fans arriving in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as it will be located close to the airport.
